James E. Thompson Award for Best Presentation
by a New Member

This award recognizes the best presentation by a new member in their first two meetings on the basis of originality, merit, and delivery. It is named in honor of Dr. James E. Thompson, the first president of the Texas Surgical Society.

President Award for “Cutting Edge” Discussion

On April 2, 1995, President Marion Lawler highlighted the Society’s tradition of blunt and spirited discussion with a gift of a fearsome Bowie knife. This award is given by the President at each Society Banquet to the Society member who offered the most insightful, sharp and precise, provocative and thoughtful discussion during the current meeting. The award is represented by a custom-made Bowie knife by Mr. Dennis Cole of Harlingen, Texas. It has an 8.5 inch-blade of 02 steel and a handle of rosewood with a nickel-silver guard. It is presented in a case carved by Mr. Larry Norman from a single Texas Mesquite log with matching wood grain on all sides. A sterling silver plate adorns the case top.

Sporting Activity Winners

One of the highlights of the Texas Surgical Meeting is the camaraderie of Surgeons. This is particularly evidenced by the excitement of the “Competitive” Sporting Events.
For decades superlative performance has been recognized by somewhat opulent trophies:

In Golf – the Arlington Cup for Low Net Score and the Brindley Cup for the Low Gross Score
In Jogging the San Antonio Cup for Speed and the Raleigh White III Cup for Style
In Tennis the Women’s Waco Cup and Men’s Waco Cup
